The United Nations sustainable development goals (UN SDGs) were proposed by the United Nations, as part of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. The SDGs consist of 17 goals, totally 169 targets. These goals aim to address a range of global issues, including poverty, hunger, inequality, climate change, and environmental degradation[1]. The development of the SDGs began in 2012, when the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development, also known as Rio+20, called for the creation of a set of sustainable development goals[2]. The goals were developed through a consultative process involving governments, civil society, and other stakeholders, and were informed by global consultations, national and regional dialogues, and thematic discussions. The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development offers a worldwide framework for promoting dignity, peace, and prosperity for both people and the planet, both presently and in the future[3].

Sustainable development goals[4]

Sustainable development

Sustainable development is defined as development that can fulfill the current needs while ensuring that the ability of future generations to meet their own needs is not compromised. Economic growth, social inclusion and environmental protection are the three core elements to achieve sustainable development. Eliminating all kinds of poverty is one of the essential parts of sustainable development[5].

Climate change relates to the SDGs

SDGs helps to reduce the greenhouse gas emissions and establish climate resilience to address climate change. On the other hand, taking action to address climate change will drive sustainable development. Thus, tackling climate change and the achievement of SDGs are mutually[6].

SDGs with oil and gas industry

Energy plays a crucial role in propelling sustainable development and is often referred to as the "golden thread" that connects most of the SDGs and the 2030 Agenda's promise to "leave no one behind." Ipieca brings together the industry to coordinate and expedite efforts to help nations achieve their goals[7].

The Business and Sustainable Development Commission's Better Business, Better World report highlights the magnitude of this prospect, indicating that creating products, services, and solutions that cater to societal requirements could generate market opportunities worth at least US$12 trillion annually. The report also advises that all sectors' primary stakeholders should benefit from formulating comprehensive “roadmaps” to guide their transition towards sustainable development in accordance with the SDGs[8].

SDG Roadmap

The Roadmap lays out how IPIECA, as an industry association, with oil and gas companies achieve a low-emissions future. Meanwhile promoting a healthier and more prosperous world aligns with the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development[9]. There main themes are obtained in this Roadmap: climate, nature and people. 10 SDGs were considered as priority areas in this sector. They are goal 3, 6, 7, 8, 9, 12, 13, 14, 15 and 16. Eight impact opportunities were determined by the Roadmap for IPIECA and the sector to make contributions to achieve the SDGs[10].

The development of this Roadmap followed the three-step process outlined of the SDG Sector Roadmap Guidelines published by WBCSD. The initial stage involves determining the present situation by mapping out the impacts of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) across the entire value chain of the sector and establishing priority SDGs for the sector. Next, the subsequent stage entails identifying significant opportunities to create an impact. This involves pinpointing key opportunities that can contribute to the SDGs and assessing the distribution of the sector. Finally, the last stage calls for action, which includes creating a plan outlining how sector peers and stakeholders can participate in the Roadmap and how IPIECA's strategy supports implementation[10].

Goals

No poverty

The first goal, “No Poverty,” is to end poverty in all its forms everywhere. This aim concentrates on eliminating extreme poverty by ensuring access to fundamental resources necessary for survival, such as food, water, sanitation, and healthcare. Furthermore, it encompasses endeavors to offer education and employment training, along with promoting sustainable economic growth and development[11].
