The PetroWiki was developed by the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) as a vehicle for knowledge capture and sharing. The initial content for PetroWiki was SPE’s seven-volume Petroleum Engineering Handbook, also known as the PEH, published in 2006-2007.

Fall 2014

eNewsletter

Release of the new Moderator eNewsletter will begin in November 2014. Articles will include but are not limited to Upcoming PetroWiki enhancements, Moderator contributions, Student contributions, Moderator comments, Trends, and Statistics.

Homepage

The PetroWiki homepage has been enhanced to include "Page of the week," "Industry news," "Statistics," and "New page additions."

New enhancement project of Interconnecting glossary terms.

Back to top

Adding "Back to Top" links enhance user satisfaction. The [[#Top|Back to top]] or Back to top link creates a link that takes the user quickly back to the top of a page. This alleviates the need of scrolling back to the top on long topic pages.

Content creation

A staff writer has been added to PetroWiki to assist with content creation. This staff writer is available to assist users and moderators with topic additions such as adding content, citations, and formatting. Contact petrowiki@spe.org for more information.

Moderator update

PetroWiki is now being moderated by more then 265 experts from the industry.Our moderators come from industry, corporate, academic, and consulting organizations. If you would like to join this volunteer effort, contact us at petrowiki@spe.org.

Spring 2014

PetroWiki is now being moderated by more then 255 experts from the industry. Our moderators come from industry, corporate, academic, and consulting organizations. If you would like to join this volunteer effort contact us at petrowiki@spe.org.

PetroWiki usage is climbing steadily and with content enhancements by users and moderators. There is high expectations that the increase in traffic to continue.

Fall 2013

New look

The new look and feel has been created for PetroWiki. The layout and color theme adds a bright crisp professional look to the new site.

Upload

The remaining content from the PEH has been uploaded. The upload went smoothly without any glitches and only took a few hours to complete.

Moderators

Continued recruitment of moderators with expertise in the PetroWiki topics. PetroWiki now has over 200 experts moderating PetroWiki pages.

ATCE 2013

The remaining Petroleum Engineering Handbook (PEH) content will be uploaded to PetroWiki before the Annual Technical Conference & Exhibition (ATCE) in September. PetroWiki already has nearly 1000 visitors/day. Expect a fully functional, content-rich wiki at ATCE.


Spring 2013

SPE has been in the final stages of launching its exciting new project "PetroWiki". It is anticipated to provide long-term benefits for the upstream oil and gas industry. As a safe guard to protect SPE’s technical reputation and high standards, content additions to PetroWiki will be moderated through a process analogous to the peer review process for our journals. Things to expect in the coming months:

  • Recruiting moderators
  • New platform (Look and Feel)
  • Upload remaining content from the PEH

Fall 2012

In late 2012 the pilot project was launched in the area of drilling and completions. Coming soon: Expansion to include the remaining areas covered in the PEH handbook.
