A type of pressure exerted in living bodies as a result of unequal concentration of salts in both sides of a cell wall or membrane. Water will move from the area that has the lesser salt concentration through the membrane into the area that has the greater salt concentration; it therefore, exerts additional pressure on its side of the membrane.
