Society of Petroleum Engineers
An indispensable tool, this book introduces the three primary phases of well-logging technology to engineering and geosciences students. This text offers an in-depth study of the electric, radioactive, and acoustic properties of sedimentary rocks. Mathematical and empirical models relate a formation property of interest to the property measured with the logging tool. Openhole logging techniques are covered, along with concepts of traditional and modern tools.
Contents: Electrical resistivity of rocks • Radioactive and acoustic properties of rocks • Measurement environment • Resistivity logs • The spontaneous potential log • Gamma ray, neutron, and sonic porosity logs • Conventional interpretation techniques • Reconnaissance and pattern-recognition interpretation techniques • Log interpretation of shaly formations • Evaluation of gas-bearing formations
About the Author:
Zaki Bassiouni is Professor Emeritus of Petroleum Engineering at Louisiana State University. He was a professor and chair of the Craft and Hawkins Department of Petroleum Engineering from July 1983 to June 2004 and Dean of the College of Engineering from July 2004 to June 2008. Bassiouni holds a BS degree in petroleum engineering from Cairo University, a diploma in geophysics from the Ecole Nationale Superieure de Petrole et des Moteurs of Paris, and MS (DEA) and PhD (Docteur Es Sciences) degrees from the University of Lille, France. Bassiouni represented SPE on the Education and Accreditation Commission (EAC) of the Accreditation Board of Engineering and Technology (ABET) from 1999 to 2004. He was the recipient of the 1995 SPE Distinguished Achievement Award for Petroleum Engineering Faculty and served as an SPE Distinguished Lecturer for the 2004-2005 and 2008-2009 seasons. Bassiouni was also selected as the 2006 recipient of the SPE Formation Evaluation Award.
